There is heat, there are wildfires, and there is a growing realization that this time is for real – something has to change significantly. Driven by the imperative to adapt to climate change and conserve water, several local municipalities have adopted natural swimming pools as a measure for water and environmental efficiency. A case in point is Braga’s Municipal Climate Action Plan (PMAC-Braga). The official document approved by the municipality actively promotes the “use of natural swimming pools over conventional ones” in the council area as a strategy against water scarcity and water quality degradation.<\/p>\n
Intermunicipal Climate Adaptation Plans point in the same direction. One example is the PIAAC of the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) of Central Alentejo \/ Baixo Alentejo. This regional climate adaptation strategy classifies natural swimming pools as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for climate resilience. They recommend implementing these infrastructures to reduce chemical loads in local aquifers, mitigate urban heat island effects, and enhance ecological corridors along river basins.<\/p>\n
