The white water lily is our customers’ favorite choice when it comes to selecting plants for biological pools. Nymphaea alba – the scientific name of this native species – possesses virtues that make it ideal for this use compared to many cultivars. As a species found in wetlands throughout Portugal, from North to South, the white water lily is the perfect option for biological pools located in protected areas, such as natural parks, where the exclusive use of native plants is essential.
However, we prefer this species even outside of those areas because it retains its leaves for much longer than most cultivars. For example, while certain crosses between American and European species show withered leaves within a few weeks, Nymphaea alba preserves its dark green color for months.
The plant also exhibits moderate growth. This means it takes one or two years to reach its maximum surface expansion, giving neighboring underwater plants time to develop before the shade of the floating leaves covers everything. Furthermore, the white water lily adapts perfectly to various depths of 2.00 meters or even more – depths that many cultivars cannot tolerate.
Despite all this technical information, what truly captivates customers are its white flowers. These keep their petals open longer than any hybrid or cultivar, ensuring the beauty of the pool for an extended period.
