Knowledge about aquatic plants is an important basis for the work as biological pool specialists. Due to this knowledge in the area, Udo Schwarzer is part of the IUCN/SSC freshwater plant specialist group. And this scientific basis is also sought after by private and public entities to survey species and aquatic vegetation in natural environments, for example for conservation reasons.

Aquatic plants are valuable indicators, for example for water quality. They also contain a natural heritage that is rare, since wetlands are part of the most threatened habitats, not only in Portugal.

The work of surveying aquatic plants requires visits to the site at different times of the year. There are species that are found more in spring, while others need warmer waters for their development and, therefore, their detection is easier at the end of summer.
