The 2nd of February is World Wetlands Day. This day aims to raise awareness of the protection and preservation of wetlands and to underline the importance they have for the existence of life on our planet.

This year is the second time that it will be celebrated as an international day of the United Nations (UN), following its adoption on August 31, 2021, by the General Assembly.

The theme of this year’s celebrations is “Ecological Restoration”. For this very reason, this day is for us a special day of celebration! Wetland action for people and nature is exactly what the team at Bio Piscinas, Lda. is making every day possible with its work and its projects carried out over many years. This task has been supported for many years by colleagues from SHB, Lda., responsible for carrying out the projects for biological pools.

And recently, we have been developing more and more projects for converting conventional pools into biological pools, that is, restoring spaces that have already been completely lost to biodiversity! With the conversion, even maintaining the architectural forms, these spaces come back to life and offer, in addition to the natural water quality, new habitats for threatened wetland flora and fauna.

However, there are more than 250 biological pools in Portugal, which together occupy estimated 50,000 square meters. Biological pools are artificial wetlands, designed as nature-based solutions. And with biological pools, wetlands enter into the lives of their visitors and users, increase biodiversity, provide bathing quality water and provide a beautiful setting every day, thanks to the flora and fauna installed in them. Each serves as a small sanctuary for flora and fauna of the wetlands, which are increasingly threatened today, and offers all the pleasure of water for those who go there to bathe, whether equipped with wings, paws or hands.
