This working place is in one of the most emblematic places in Portugal, the Parque do Palácio da Pena in Serra de Sintra. A great honor for us to add a lake, designed by us, to this historic environment. After all, we came to learn that our project was the result of an old plan that has existed since the 60s of the last century, creating a lake of large volume, capable of storing the water that flows tirelessly from the water mines in the park.
It is a large biological lake, approximately 1,000 m2 in surface area, with a water volume of around 1,500 m2. Various margin areas occupy 500 m2, the deep area is 500 m2 in size. Biological treatment consists of different zones in the lake, intended for water purification through biological and mechanical processes. In other words, the set works with an exclusively natural water purification system, using ecosystem services for it, and thus the project is considered a bio-based solution.
The implementation of the project significantly changed the nature of the implementation site. It was once a type of quarry, an area for exploration of inert materials and later a place for the disposal of gardening waste during the second half of the century. XX. The large water table with its natural banks makes the place very inviting for park visitors and equally attractive for biodiversity.
The main purpose of this lake is to store water from mines in the park for later use in irrigation, and to create a fire-fighting water reserve. The technical equipment provided allows these uses and the necessary maintenance of them. Additionally, the lake serves environmental education purposes during guided tours in the park. For this purpose we designed a large wooden jetty that allows nature observation. And, after all, the lake offers a place of rest and contemplation in the fresh air at the top of the mountains, surrounded by the dazzling green of the park’s unique vegetation.
